Betrothal portrait of Anne of Cleves, fourth wife of Henry VIII of England, by Hans Holbein the Younger c 1539. It was on the basis of this portrait that Henry VIII chose her to be his fourth Queen. Watercolor on parchment.
Hans Holbein the Younger (1497 1543) Holbein was a German artist and printmaker who worked in a Northern Renaissance style. In England, where he became court painter to Henry VIII, Holbein was known chiefly as a painter of portraits. His services were much in demand.
